Zunun Qadiri is a writer who lived in East Turkestan between 1912 and 1989 and came to the fore in the history of Uyghur literature. During his fifty years of literary life, he wrote many plays, stories, poems, and tales and contributed to shaping Uyghur literature. In his works, he presented essential data about the social life of the Uyghur people, which was shaped around the ideology of the period, and frequently touched upon the roles of men and women and the change of these roles in his works. In this study, analyses were made regarding the social roles of Uyghur women and men, focusing on Zunun Qadiri’s plays “Gunçem” [Gunchem], “Gülnisa” [Gülnisa], “Toy” [Celebration] and “Uçraşkanda” [When We Meet]. As a result of these investigations, many issues were identified, such as female characters exposed to male violence, inequalities between genders, social and individual problems of women and men, and the responsibility of providing for the household solely on men. The findings obtained were evaluated, taking into account the concept of gender.
