Abstract
Based on the thesis defended in this research, shirt represents the “outer spirit” and “fortune” of the mother and baby in birth-related beliefs and rituals. In the Turkish belief system, clothing holds a significant place for both its concrete functions and its meaning within the cultural context. Clothing worn during critical periods by an individual, such as during transition periods, is not only a material cultural element but they also carry a mythical symbolic value. In this context, shirt is important in almost all rites of passage. It also stands out with this mythical symbolic function, especially during the birth process. The shirt is a concrete representation of the individual's outer spirit and fortune. In the Turkish belief system, the spirit is not viewed as a mere static element attached to the body. Rather, it is considered a dynamic force that can exist outside the body. In this context, the outer spirit is believed to be capable of transcending into various objects and functions as an extracorporeal element representing the individual's vitality, existence, and life energy. Fortune, on the other hand, can be defined as a divine power or life energy believed to be given to the individual by God. Therefore, spirit and fortune are not considered to be independent of each other. On the contrary, they are seen as concepts that influence each other. In rituals and beliefs related to birth, the shirt symbolizes both the outer spirit and good fortune. This is because birth in Turkish culture carries not only a biological but also a symbolic and mythical quality.
