Abstract
Theater and dramatic arts are widely considered as the art of “mimesis” (showing), although in theater and other dramatic genres it is also seen as “diegesis” (telling). However, due to the specific characteristics of dramatic genres, diegesis/narrative takes up a secondary role. In the analyzes of theater and dramatic art, diegesis rather appears in the form of “diegetic space” (the space mentioned/narrated) in connection with the use of space. In our article, firstly we will focus on the concepts of diegesis and diegetic place, then we will try to reveal that such as places and events, some people can also be included in the pieces only through narration, in addition to physically being in the casting. In this study, in which we named the foregoing people as “diegetic person” because they are not included in the casting, but instead are included in the pieces through the narration of other people, we will focus on three pieces from the Western theater and two from the Turkish theater covering the period from Ancient Greece to the 1950s in order to embody the universality of our approach. Thus, we will try to show that the existence of diegetic figures, which have not been evaluated independently until today, is parallel to the existence of theater and that they continue to exist in modern theater. Another common aspect of the five pieces we have chosen as examples is that the diegetic figures in these pieces are dead fathers.
